Tour de Cure kicks off to raise vital funds for Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute

110 riders and support crew will overcome COVID restrictions to raise vital money for cancer research as part of the 2021 Tour de Cure (TdC) VIC Discovery Tour from Daylesford to Melbourne, via Ballarat and Ocean Grove. The riders will brave the summer heat and cycle more than 400kms across central Victoria.

Each cyclist has a personal connection to cancer, whether they be survivors, supporting loved ones with cancer or paying tribute to loved ones that have succumbed to it, or are researchers or staff from the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute.

Some participants like Gerry Bateman - a much-loved TdC supporter who has raised more than $100,000 since 2015 – are also undergoing their own cancer journeys. Gerry has supported the tour after not only losing her mum and brother to cancer but receiving her own diagnosis in 2018.

“I’ve always supported the tour in efforts to help find a cure for cancer because of the losses I’ve suffered in my family,” she says.

“Everything changed for me though in 2018 when I found a lump and was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive triple negative metaplastic breast cancer. I’ve been on the rollercoaster ever since. I had surgery to remove the lump in September 2018 and aggressive chemo treatments for more than four months after that.

“I was told I had a 60-70 per cent chance of the cancer reoccurring in the first two years, but I’m now counting the days to be cancer free for longer than that.”

The inaugural VIC Discovery Tour will span across some of Victoria’s most beautiful countryside and coastline. The Tour will begin in Daylesford with riders and crew setting off on an action packed three-days, riding 400 kms through spectacular countryside to Ballarat, along beautiful coastline of Ocean Grove, before finishing in Melbourne.

Geoff Coombes, TDC co-founder says that he is proud to be partnering with the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute (ONJCRI).

“Our inaugural VIC Discovery Tour will raise over $350k to bring four world class research projects to life at the ONJCRI, tackling stomach, colorectal, ovarian and rare cancers.”
