TOUR DE CURE – VIC DISCOVERY TOUR 2021 STATS AND FACTS
Daylesford, Ballarat, Ocean Grove, Melbourne 26 – 28 February 2021
About Tour de Cure
Tour de Cure raises vital funds to support the researchers, surgeons and clinicians who dedicate their lives to finding a cure for cancer. Through our magical, challenging and inspirational events we raise money to fund the boldest research, the most talented scientists and the ground-breaking projects that we believe will have the biggest impact on cancer. From humble beginnings in 2007, the Tour de Cure community has grown to become a national movement of thousands of people walking, running, riding and swimming to raise awareness and inspire support in the fight to cure cancer. The generosity of our supporters has enabled us to fund over 500 cancer projects and we’re proud to have contributed to 40 scientific cancer breakthroughs.
The Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute, as the La Trobe University School of Cancer Medicine, is a leader in the development of experimental and breakthrough cancer treatments. They investigate and develop treatments for cancers of the breast, bowel and gastrointestinal tract, lung, skin, prostate, liver and brain. Their researchers and clinician scientists lead clinical trials, giving patients access to potential new treatments including immunotherapies and personalised medicine. They are integrated within the Olivia Newton-John Centre at Austin Health in Melbourne, Australia, with research laboratories only metres away from where patients are cared for and receive treatment. This inspires and enables the rapid translation of scientific discoveries into clinical trials of new and better, cancer treatments.
This year we are looking to fund four amazing research projects at the ONJCRI, focussing on stomach cancer, colorectal cancer and ovarian cancer, along with a study into treatment for rare cancers.
This year’s VIC Discovery Tour will be taking in some of Victoria’s most beautiful countryside and coastline. The Tour will begin in Daylesford with riders and crew setting off on an action packed 3-days riding 400 kms through spectacular countryside to Ballarat, along beautiful coastline of Ocean Grove, before finishing in Melbourne.

Cancer funding in Australia and the Tour de Cure story
In late 2020 the Federal government's final medical research funding round of the year were quietly released to researchers. The sector estimates about 10 per cent of applications were successful, the lowest success rate on record. Cancer research has been hit with a perfect storm during COVID 19 and the impact is twofold:
- Funding for research has dramatically slowed down which has seen our cancer research capabilities fall backward
- Testing for cancer has regressed by more than 750,000 people in the past six months meaning delayed diagnosis, less early detection and proactive treatments for tens of thousands of people.
Clearly there is a gap in how much research the government can fund, and that is why TdC exists. We raise money through personal and corporate donations for bike rides, walks, health challenges and gala events to fund much needed cancer research, prevention and support programs.
Over the last 13 years, TdC has raised over $60Million, funded 502 cancer projects, contributed to over 40 cancer advances or breakthroughs, and talked to over 150,000 school children about making healthy lifestyle decisions. While this sounds impressive, we are only able to fund a quarter of all cancer project grant applications made to us each year. We are determined to fund more, because we know that our funding allows the continuation of vital cancer research in Australia.
We couldn’t do it without the continued support from our corporate partners and donations by everyday Australians. We’ll only end cancer by working together to fund much needed research. And that’s something we can all come together to support.
