We're about reducing your cancer risk
Research shows that 1 in 3 Australian cases of cancer can be prevented, largely through lifestyle changes.
We fund the cancer prevention projects that help to raise awareness and reduce the risk of developing the disease.
Why prevention matters
Many people think that getting cancer is down to genes, fate or bad luck. But your cancer risk actually depends on a combination of your genes, your environment and things to do with your lifestyle, which you're more able to control.
We fund cancer prevention projects - including seminars, workshops, school programs, cancer awareness campaigns - that encourage people to minimise their risk by:
- Keeping a healthy bodyweight
- Enjoying the sun safely
- Staying active
- Cutting back on alcohol
- Eating a healthy, balanced diet
- Not smoking
Did you know?
Approximately 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70, with more than 750,000 people treated for one or more non-melanoma skin cancers in Australia each year.
Catching it early is critical. A regular skin check up is an easy, fast and no fuss prevention strategy.
“I can’t stress enough how important it is to have a melanoma identified early. If you have a suspicious mole or lesion on your skin, please have it checked – it will save your life.”

Leading a sun-smart lifestyle
We fund programs to raise awareness that the best way to enjoy the sun safely and protect your skin from sunburn is to use a combination of shade, clothing and sunscreen.
We know that children and teenagers often need a reminder or a helping hand to get into good habits so we fund programs that promote sun safety.

Cycling is an outdoor activity, so we always make sure we are sun-smart when we ride and encourage all our riders to get regular skin check-ups.

Early detection saved my life
As a multiple cancer survivor, I’m passionate about cancer prevention. In 2016, I rode in the inaugural TDC Peter Mac Ride in Victoria to raise awareness and funds for cancer prevention. In 2000, I discovered I had a Level 3 melanoma – an advanced stage of the disease, which required surgery. In 2018, I had my sixth melanoma removed. Early skin cancer detection saved my life, so I am passionate about reducing other people’s risk through regular check-ups. As the Managing Director of 1stAvailable, we encourage all our patients to book regular skin check-ups. We recently partnered with Tour de Cure and SunDoctors to raise awareness through our #getnaked campaign.
