Funding cancer research projects
The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is one of the world’s leading cancer research, education and treatment centres globally and Australia’s only public hospital solely dedicated to caring for people affected by cancer.
Tour de Cure is passionate about helping people who are touched by cancer, Funding can be difficult to obtain in Australia, with many brilliant researchers and scientists competing for government grants.
The Peter Mac Ride 2018 will fund pioneering cancer projects that will change the lives of cancer patients and the lives of the loved ones who support them.
Tailored Immunotherapy for Kids with Neuroblastoma
Neuroblastoma is one of the most common cancers in kids. If they survive, the patients suffer devastating, life-ling side-effects. Donations from the Tour de Cure Peter Mac Ride will be used to treat these patients and limit their suffering by providing a personalised diagnosis with extreme precision. The findings for each patient will be developed into a specific immunotherapy that has much lower toxicity
Genetically Modifying Immune Cells to Fight Cancer
The use of white blood cells genetically engineered to eradicate cancer cells has been a major breakthrough in cancer treatment. These cells (known as CAR T cells, or killer T cells) are very effective in the treatment of blood cancers but do not currently work well in solid cancers. Donations from the Peter Mac Ride will be used to overcome this by reprogramming the CAR T cells to significantly enhance their ability to rapidly multiply within the patient. This will make the cells ‘fitter’ and better equipped to target the tumour cells. This project has the potential to make a significant clinical impact and save lives by making CAR T cell therapy more effective in solid cancers.
